Promptly Friday: U-851

The voyage of u-boat 851 had taken her into deep Atlantic waters. Her official orders were to deliver a load of Mercury to Japan. However, U-851’s true mission was to find an ancient city that had long been lost to the depths. Hitler’s obsessions with ancient whispers of great power were common knowledge among the majority of his armies.

This journey was not to go as the official records state. Where U-851 was heading was supposedly far more ancient than any site on land. Where the coordinates were acquired, however, none could say. They weren’t about to question their orders as everyone knew what happened to those who did.

As they approached their destination they were surprised to see the ruins appear out of the murky depths. Their lights began to illuminate the city’s streets and buildings as they looked for what was suppose to be a temple. Only a single building emerged from the darkness. Glimmering in gold and what looked like marble, the structure looked as though it had just been built.

A handful of crew members donned submersible suits and ventured into the old streets toward the temple entrance. Strange creatures decorated the walls and served as statues on the grounds. Unease began to set in as the creatures depicted looked to be almost watching them all. As they entered the grand halls a pedestal became illuminated, and on it sat the relic they had been searching for.

They had no name for it. They didn’t need a name. All they needed was a description and this thing matched it perfectly. The lead explorer leaned forward to pick up the item which was casting its golden glow over the inner sanctum. He turned to let his comrades know it was time to go but found not a trace of them.

Suddenly, the man began to hear music. Not just hear, but he could also feel it through his hands; in his bones.  He slowly turned his attention back to the item in his hands; the music getting louder. Tendrils shot out of the glowing object, and it began to pulsate. Before he knew it, the man had begun to pull the thing toward his face. He tried to cast it aside but could not move of his own accord.

A small tendril found its way to the suit’s viewport. Terror seized the man as the seemingly fragile appendage pushed through the thick glass like it was butter. Marble guardians appeared just at the edge of illumination, the man realized then what happened to his team. His eyes shot wide as he knew he and his crew would not be returning from this trip.

About T. A. Rindler

What dreams may come when the mind dances in worlds of imagination? Wordsmithing. It started as a hobby. Now I'm in the process of trying to make it something more than just that. My mind dances fluidly through imaginative world's both hellish and serene, and all that lies between. I've dabbled in so many ideas and interests, but writing has always been something that I would always return to doing. Whether I was writing a story, poetry, abstract thoughts, ideas, essays, or even written/online debates, I have always enjoyed the creative stream of ideas that spring forth. Join me in my journey!
