The Light: Rekindled

Following up with last weekend’s “In My Head”, Toby (name changed to protect his identity) and I have been helping each other get over our break-ups one cup of coffee at a time. After being in an abusive relationship, I’m sort of struggling to regain my balance with letting people get close and getting intimate with them (mostly men). As usual, click play and listen to Sara Bareilles’ “The Light”, as you read my poem, “Rekindled”. Let me know what you think in the comments.

“Rekindled”

Though I was broken and weak,
I fought and clawed my way up.
Just as I neared the opening of my grave,
I slipped, sliding back into the dark depths.

Out of my past, you reached out and found my hand.
Helping me reach stable ground,
Memories flood my head and heart.
You helped me fill my empty grave and walk away.

A friendship renewed and rekindled;
Two chipped hearts pieced back together.
Pasts intertwined, futures unknown,
Twin candles shining for brighter lives.

Four steps forward, one slide back,
With coffees in hand, we move
Towards a future we know nothing of
But are willing to explore together.
